So we all know that there are execptions to every rule right? ☺ I always recommend that parents bring their babies in within the first 10 days to capture those sleepy, curled up newborn images. As a general rule of thumb after the two week mark babies are awake for longer periods of time and much less inclined to be posed.

Well this beautiful baby boy is an exception to this rule (a rare exception!). He decided that he wanted to see the world a couple of months earlier than scheduled and after a bit of a stay in the hospital he was already 2 months old by the time I got to meet him. However, although I was a little worried when I booked the appointment, Gabe turned out to be a dream to photograph!!

So if you look closely you'll see Gabe has a little grin on his face...I am fairly certain that he is having a little chuckle about just having relieved himself on my blanket LOL!! He probably figures it's payback for all the posing he's having to do...I say it's worth a little laundry (ok, sometimes a lot of laundry) to get a few beautiful images that will last a lifetime :)

I have had such an amazing year and it's no secret to those that know me that the wee little newborns are super special to me so I am sharing this little video of some of my favourite shots! I did share this recently with those that have subscribed to my newsletter as well as with those that follow me on Facebook and one of my clients pointed out that I forgot her baby!! A huge oops on my part because I intended to include all my wonderful newborns and it was just an innocent oversight :) I have rectified the situation and have included everyone up until my most recent newborn (with the exception of one family that preferred not to have their images shared online) If I accidently missed another please, please let me know!!

I hope you all enjoy some wonderful times spent with family and friends over the holidays and I will be back in 2012 after some time off with my family!!

This could very well be my last Santa baby and last newborn of 2011....maybe :) I still have one more mama-to-be due soon, but it'll be a close call as to whether the session will be in 2011 or the first of 2012! Other than that I am done with sessions for the year. This week will be all about finishing up as much as I can with editing, orders, designing albums etc... so that I can take a bit of time off over the holidays to spend with my family and prepare for what promises to be a very exciting 2012!

Can I just say that I LOVE this little sweetie's long, long eyelashes and those perfect little lips! Have I ever mentionned how much I love photographing newborns......

It's such a honour when parents put their trust in me with the most important thing in their lives...their sweet little babies! I am sure the whole process of a newborn session can be overwhelming to new parents that are already so tired and emotionally and physically drained so soon after the birth of their child. But this moment....the moment that they are so tiny is gone in the blink of an eye and although every new stage is an exciting one, these first few days will be gone forever. With a little (ok sometimes a lot!) of patience we can capture those memories forever.... I am so thrilled that this little boy's parents had the trust in me and the patience it took to get some lovely images of their brand new son. All of my sessions are worth every pee (or worse!) accident on my clothes and blankets and every minute of waiting for the baby to be comfortable and settle into that nice deep sleep that allows us to capture images like those below.

I have been photographing Natalie since she was born and all throughout her first year and I was so thrilled when they got in touch with me recently to book another session! Natalie's going to be a big sister!!! In some newborn photography circles this past week has been named newborn safety week and photographers are trying to get the message out there that safety is priority number one when it comes to photographing these precious little babies!! Many new photographers see all these great poses and mistakenly think that you must capture this final image right in the camera as is...This is not so. Photoshop (or other photo editing software) plays a huge role in creating newborn art. Many of the beautiful newborn images you see out there are the result of the creativity of the photographer during and after the session.

There are many different approaches to creating a final image. Some require the use of two or more photos to create a composite (I use this technique often) or sometimes one photo is used and unwanted elements are just cloned out, as in the example below. I use both methods regularly, just depends on the pose/image and my mood :) as to which one I will use. Parents: please understand that while this type of image can be done safely, not all babies are up for all poses. I will not attempt a pose if I feel your baby is not suited for it. There is no image in the world that is worth putting your baby at any risk. Most of these types of images do require your baby to very comfortable and soundly asleep. Even the simplest of blanket poses aren't for every baby. It is very important to read the cues the baby is giving us as to what he or she will be comfortable with.

So here is a little glimpse of a before and after. This first photo is what I used to create the bottom photo. The baby was never lifted above the large 40" diametre bean bag more that what you see here, a couple of inches. Dad kept his hand behind the baby's head to stop him from swiveling around and mom was ready with an extra hand right at the side should their baby have decided to wake up and stretch. I usually have someone hold their hand right near the baby until I am ready. They can pull their hand away and I snap the photo and the hand can go right back. Before even getting to the camera we carefully test the baby's weight distribution by gently lifting him with a hand underneath supporting him.

I have been fortunate enough to be extremely busy during the 2011 year and love and appreciate everyone one of the wonderful clients that have come to see me to capture such precious times in their lives! With a full schedule though, things do need to be prioritized and unfortunately blogging peeks has taken a bit of a back seat in effort to keep up with all my sessions appointments, editing of images and client orders. I am hoping to get back to it and update all the amazing little wonders I have had the pleasure to photograph! All of that being said, I just had to post just a few (well....quite a bit more than a few!) from a recent (if you consider 6 weeks ago recent!) session. This first photo just cracks me up... I LOVE IT!! I also love this family for trying out an idea that I had for maternity sessions. I think 'A' had a good time painting mom's belly :) And of course since I am so behind in blogging, baby 'C' has already arrived and had his session as well!

This is one of my favourite photos from this session...I love how simple it is, just about the baby and nothing else.

Welcome to the first in my new series of guest blog posts!! I am so excited to be incorporating some of the thoughts and experiences of my past and current clients. So many clients say to me that they had no idea what was involved in a session (especially the newborn sessions!!) so I thought it might be fun to share experiences from the point of view of the client for a change instead of hearing from my point of view. I already have a few clients lined up for guest blog posts, but would welcome as many stories as there are clients so if you are interested in sharing your experience just send me an email and I will give you all the details.

So without further ado sit back grab your coffee and read about the 'L' family's experience for their maternity session! (Just my two cents...I loved this session, and these kids ROCKED!! So much fun and personality)

Ever since starting my own little blog, here, I have a WHOLE new appreciation (read envy) for children's photographers. Getting my little one to sit still for a few shots is next.to.impossible. When I was pregnant with my third ~ I insisted on capturing the moment.
Choosing the right photographer was very important to me.

It was such an intimate, private thing.

And I hoped to get a few shots of my elusive (read: hates to be photographed) son during the process.

I found Shelly quite by accident.

She is not close to us geographically speaking.
But she was SO good ~ it was worth the drive. And then some.
She was welcoming. Warm. Kind.

She had cookies for the kids. (home-made. ahem.) Sweet words to make them feel comfortable.

Exactly what this boy needed.

Miracle worker? I think so.
My kids had so much fun, I kid you not, they DID NOT want the shoot to end. No small feat. Especially for the boy.

They talked about it the entire way home. About Shelly. (...about her cookies)

I love photographs. More than any other art form ~ a picture can capture what nothing else can.

But when you are VERY pregnant...it might just be the last thing you feel like doing.

I felt HUGE and UNCOMFORTABLE.

Shelly captured a moment that was serene and beautiful.

I am happy every time I look at these photos.

They hang on our bedroom wall ~ a reminder of that exciting time...just before our little family changed forever.

I am so glad I found Shelly.

Have I mentioned how much I love seeing my wee little clients grow? I've been photographing this little guy since he was in his mommy's tummy :)

I am now officially caught up on August's photo sessions...on to September's! So many wonderful sessions from September that I can't wait to edit! Thank you again to all my wonderful clients and their patience in waiting for their photos!! I have found over the last few years of being in this business that there are slow times and busy times... With the exception of a couple of slower months in the spring, this year has been incredibly busy and there are no signs of slowing down for the rest of the year either. I cannot even tell you how much I appreciate all the new and returning clients that have been booking sessions with me...trusting me to capture lasting memories of your little ones is an incredible feeling!! Back by popular demand :) I have decided to host one day of Holiday Card mini sessions this year. I have had a few clients ask if I was going to offer these again and in all honesty I really didn't know if I would be able to fit it in in a timely manner. In case some of you haven't noticed, we are already half way through September!!! I am still trying to figure out where June, July and August went...however, the reality is that clients have been reminding me that winter is right around the corner with people booking into February at this point! Gotta love organized folks that are thinking ahead though...those that have pre-booked their winter newborn sessions dates can rest easy knowing that they will be guaranteed a session spot :)

So....without further ado, Holiday Card Mini's will be held in studio only on October 1st, 2011. There are limited sessions, and first booking options are being offered to current and previous clients until Wednesday September 21, 2011. Any remaining sessions slots will be opened up to anyone wishing to book on Thursday September 22, 2012. If you are a new client and wish to be put on a waiting list, just send me a quick email...first come, first served. All sessions must be reserved with a 30% deposit. If I only had one word of advice about photographing newborns it would be this: patience. With a little patience from everyone involved even the fussiest of babies eventually give in :) She may have made me work a little harder for her session but it was worth every minute of it because I absolutely adore the images we were able to get from Eva's session. Here is another little guy I have been photographing since he was a newborn! I loved that we were able to get outside for this session because 'Z' has the most AMAZING eyes that just lend so well to natural light photography....mmmmm...I could just eat him up he is so cute! Been photographing this little guy for over a year now! Let me tell you that chasing him around this session was a work out and a half! Once kids learn how to walk that's it...we were lucky if got him to sit still for more than 0.3 seconds. I cannot believe that it's September already! Where did the summer go?! As of September 1, 2011 there are a few minor changes to the pricing menu. One of the things that I am so excited to introduce is a special discount for returning newborn clients during their baby's first year! I have retired the Watch me Grow package and replaced it with the following:

First year for returning clients: 50% off session fee

This is a special option for those clients that wish to capture more memories during their baby’s first year. Book up to 2 sessions in your baby’s first year and receive 50% off both session fees.

*standard session only, not applicable on mini sessions
*must have held a newborn session to qualify.
*final session must be held by the time your child is 15 months.
*suggested ages for subsequent sessions: 6-8 months and 12-15 months

So, there has been a lot of talk lately in the newborn photography community about newborn posing and safety. I just wanted to take a minute to share my thoughts on this. Safety should always come first, and babies should not be forced into any pose that is unsafe or uncomfortable to them. Some babies can be posed certain ways, and others not. There are always so many factors at play and it is important for photographers to be able to read the cues the baby is giving them.

Under no circumstance should the baby's safety be at risk. Ever. Period. The reality is, that newborn photography is a form of art that is possible with the help of wonderful tools such as Photoshop. With photo editing software it is possible to create that oh-so-cute shot without ever having put the baby in a dangerous or uncomfortable situation. Lately people online have been discussing the chin in hands pose like below. Totally unnecessary to make a few day old baby support the weight of his head. It's actually much easier just to take two photos of the baby being supported by an assistant in two different location then merging them together with photo editing software. While I don't have any intention of giving too many editing secrets away here :), I just thought parents and newbie photographers might like to know that it can and should be done safely.

This applies to other poses as well such as the hanging hammock or sling poses. When I get the chance I will pop in another post showing the safety basics of that one as well. Safety is ALWAYS number one priority with me and risking injury to a baby is not worth any photo, in my opinion. Parents (including my clients!) if you ever have any questions or concerns please, pretty please speak up! Ultimately it is your responsibility to have the final word on your baby's safety and comfort and no photographer should ever tell you otherwise!

Once in a while it's necessary to reschedule a newborn session because the baby has decided she wants nothing to do with modeling :) This was one of those cases...the first time Eva came out we were fighting a losing battle from the get-go. Sometimes it's hard for parents to believe that anything would be any different on another day, but just one day later made all the difference in the world for Eva... Just had to share this for mom and dad to show them that it was worth the effort packing the diaper bag up and heading out again! When things quiet down in the studio and I get a chance to do some major blog catching up I will post more from her session along with a long list of other client photos I can't wait to share. (starting to think I might need an assistant to help with the blogging and administrative work!)

I was feeling a little fun and creative and put this nest together and made the hat right before this little girl's session... and was so excited that I got the opportunity to use it right away! This nest has rapidly become a favourite of mine and my clients...I do believe I have used it in every session since this one a few weeks ago. Now I just need to make a boy bird hat!
Now what can I say about wee little Leah...she made my heart melt (or maybe that was just because it was so warm in the studio? LOL!) Seriously though, she was so precious and just rocked her session, she let us fold, squish and pose her anyway we wanted. Love it!

We did pop outside at the end of their session for a few outdoor photos and I am sure we were probably all questionning this idea after just a few steps out the door. I do believe this session took place during the hottest record breaking heatwave day last month :) But they were game and so was I and I am so glad because I absolutely adore this first photo! Their baby arrived recently and I am so excited to meet him very soon for his modeling debut!

I had an enjoyable yet hot, very hot morning with this wonderful family a few weeks ago. We even had our session scheduled early in the morning, but it was so hot and humid that after an hour I think we all felt like we were melting!! Although it was a bit awkward to get into the creek, it felt oh so good to get a little wet!

I wanted to take a minute to talk about session bookings. This summer as been the busiest summer to date with lots of wonderful babies and families booking studio and outdoor sessions. But there is only one of me and I like to give each and every client the attention they deserve, so I do limit the number of sessions I take in a week. By the time I factor in session times (in the case of newborns can be upward of 4-5 hours), editing time, print ordering time, client consultations etc...it's amazing how fast the week fills up! I recently even chose to re-arrange my holiday time to accomodate some wonderful newborns! I just hate saying no, especially to newborns :) Unfortunately though I have had to turn away several last minute newborn sessions this week...If you are wanting a newborn session please contact me as early as possible to reserve your tentative date and time. (actual session date/time will be firmed up as soon as your baby arrives) I book tentative times according to your due date to ensure that I don't book too many newborn sessions around the same due date.

So let's get down to the nitty gritty... Just recently the booking inquiries have been coming in all at once and I wanted to let everyone know that unless you have confirmed a session date/time AND have received acknowledgement from me either verbally or by email then your session isn't booked! I give out the same availability dates to everyone one that inquires and until there is a mutual confirmation the date/time is up for grabs, first come first served. I do have a policy that your session isn't confirmed until you pay your non-refundable 30% session fee deposit. I have been a little lax with enforcing this policy in the past, but due to the volume of sessions I have been booking lately, from this point foward, this will be the only way to guarantee a session time will be saved for you. (those of you that have already booked your sessions and received confirmation from me, not to worry if you didn't pay your deposit...your session is booked!) If you have any questions or concerns about your booking please let me know.

So here's the scoop...Miss J and I seem to have a bit of a love/hate relationship going on :) I LOVE her....she hates my camera...or at least I am convinced she does. LOL! I have been photographing her since she was a newborn and she still makes me work hard at every session!! She was all smiles until the camera came out...but fear not I still got some adorable shots of the big sister-to-be. I love, love, love the antique bassinet they have ready for the new baby and I really love the images we were able to capture with mom, dad and J and the bassinet.
(oh, and Miss J has been testing out the latest in scrunchy face smiles these days...again, just for the camera LOL! Gotta love it!!)

I have been photographing {N} since she was a newborn! I love all the babies that come my way, but baby {A} really found a special place in my heart. I was so glad that I got to meet her!!!
